CYFRA21-1 Test — Lung Cancer Marker
Introduction
CYFRA21-1 (Cytokeratin 19 fragment) is a tumor-associated antigen, commonly elevated in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), especially squamous carcinoma. It is used as a tumor marker for diagnosis support, treatment monitoring, and recurrence follow-up.
Note: Elevated CYFRA21-1 does not always indicate lung cancer. Benign conditions such as pulmonary inflammation, COPD, or renal impairment may also raise levels.
Why Take a CYFRA21-1 Test?
- Risk assessment: Supports clinical evaluation when lung cancer is suspected.
- Treatment monitoring: Tracks changes during therapy to evaluate treatment effectiveness.
- Recurrence follow-up: Helps monitor patients after surgery or treatment for relapse.
Method & Workflow
A venous blood sample is collected to measure serum CYFRA21-1. Results should be interpreted together with imaging (CT, PET-CT) and clinical findings.
Factors & Notes
- Benign conditions (COPD, pneumonia, renal dysfunction) may also elevate CYFRA21-1.
- Reference ranges may vary between laboratories; follow your report’s range.
- Serial trends are more clinically meaningful than single values.
Who Should Consider Testing?
- Patients clinically suspected of NSCLC, especially squamous carcinoma
- Confirmed lung cancer patients under treatment monitoring
- Post-treatment or post-surgery patients for recurrence surveillance
- Individuals included in lung cancer tumor marker panels
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q1: Does high CYFRA21-1 always mean lung cancer?
A: No. Inflammation, COPD, or renal impairment can also cause elevations.
Q2: Can CYFRA21-1 be used for general screening?
A: No. It is not suitable as a stand-alone screening tool and should be combined with imaging and clinical assessment.
Q3: How should CYFRA21-1 results be interpreted?
A: Focus on serial results rather than one-time values, and interpret with other markers (CEA, NSE, ProGRP, SCC) plus imaging.
